DACOR and DACOR Bacon House Foundation have partnered with the Institute of Classical Art & Architecture Mid-Atlantic Chapter to offer members and friends of both organizations a fascinating peek into the largely unexplored connection between the Dacor Bacon House and Oak Hill Cemetery where, in a stunningly beautiful mausoleum, members of the William T. Carroll family were laid to rest. Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court, William Carroll resided in what was then known as the Ringgold-Carroll House (now the Historic DACOR Bacon House) in the mid-to-late1890’s. The cemetery will be full of spring blooms carpeting its 22 acres of manicured landscape, tapering down into Rock Creek Park below.
DACOR members and ICAA members are invited to gather first at DACOR Bacon House for a continental breakfast ($10) on Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m., followed by a tour of the House guided by DACOR House and Garden Committee Co-Chair Jewel Maune. Jewel was U.S. Department of State’s Interior Designer and Project Coordinator for almost 19 years and now has her own eponymous consulting firm.
Guests will make their own the short distance to Oak Hill Cemetery at 12 noon to hear Dr. Terry Walz, DACOR’s historian, connect the dots from the Federal era house in Foggy Bottom to the cemetery in Georgetown, with its historically and architecturally important chapel, lovely arbors, and handsome monuments.
An Oak Hill docent will then guide guests through the grounds. Guests may choose from three options for attending. Advance registration is required.
