Call for Entries for 2023 John Russell Pope Awards

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter is pleased to announce the 2023 John Russell Pope Awards celebrating excellence in traditional architecture, interior design, urban design, and landscape architecture.

*The Artisanship category considers various handcrafted and/or fabrication trades involved in the execution and/or construction of a work of architecture, interior design, or landscape in addition to the allied arts of sculpture and painting.


Eligibility

Professionals

The individual or firm submitting must be a member of the ICAA. One may join the ICAA at the time of submission online at www.classicist-washington.org.

Entrants with offices within the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic region of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. may submit entries located anywhere worldwide. For entrants with offices outside the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Region, entries must be located within Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, or Washington, D.C.

Projects must have a completion date no earlier than January 2018. Projects submitted for Landscape Design must have a completion date no earlier than January 2016. Urban Design category entries must be a commissioned project built or planned after January 2018 and may be unbuilt.

Emerging Classicists

Current students and recent graduates are eligible for the Emerging Classicist Awards. The individual or group submitting must be a member of the ICAA or the L’Enfants – the emerging professionals of the WMA ICAA. One may join the ICAA or the L’Enfants at the time of submission online at www.classicist-washington.org.

The Emerging Classicist Awards for Design and Drawing will be considered in any of the twelve submission categories of architecture, landscape design, historic preservation, urban design, interior design, and artisanship. Submissions for Design Award must portray an original design. Submissions for the Drawing Award must be an original composition though the subject need not be the entrant’s original design.

Either the project, student’s educational program, or recent graduate’s place of residence must be located within the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic region of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.

Eligible students submitting work must be currently enrolled in an institution or program such as a university, community college, trade school, or high school. The submission must have been completed no earlier than 2018.

Recent graduates submitting work must have graduated no earlier than 2021. The submission must have been completed no earlier than 2018.


Entry Procedures and Requirements

Submission Requirements

DEADLINE EXTENSION – FEBRUARY 6, 2023

The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Sulgrave Club on April 28, 2023.

Entries and application fees are accepted and processed online via Submittable.com and must include the following:

Project Statement: A brief summary highlighting features of the project, site, landscape, and any details necessary to convey the project’s significance to the jury; 300 word max.

Image Caption List:  A list of image descriptions numbered to correspond with their respective image file names. Each description should be no longer than 30 words. The file name for the Image Caption List should be as follows:
            [Project Name]_00_Image Captions

Project Images: Photographs of significant views along with plans, elevations, sections, details, etc. explaining the project to the jury. Entrants are discouraged from including descriptive text on the images, see Image Caption List above; room names, legends, labels, etc. are permitted.

  • A maximum of 20 pages/images can be submitted.
  • Files must be pdf or jpg.
  • Image files are to have a minimum resolution of 300dpi.
  • Individual files are to be no larger than 10MB.
  • File names for submitted images should include project name, be numbered, 01 through 20, and specify the image type. Entrants must use the following file naming convention:
    [Project Name]_[01-20]_[photo, plan, elevation, section, detail, etc.]

For example:
           Smith Street House_05_first floor plan

Poster (Emerging Classicists Only): Entrants for the Emerging Classicist Design Award must submit a 36″ x 36″ PDF poster of their project for inclusion in an Emerging Classicists submissions gallery at the 2021 John Russell Pope Awards Ceremony. Entrants for the Emerging Classicist Drawing Award may submit a poster if they feel their work can be appropriately formatted to 36″ x 36″. The poster will not be included in the adjudication. Entrants may take their posters home after the ceremony.

  • Any images used should be selected from those submitted for adjudication.
  • The poster must include Project Title and Location. No information identifying the entrant, school, or date should be included. 
  • Entrants must use the following file naming convention: 
    [Project Name]_Poster

Nothing should be included in a submission that identifies the firm or individual making the submission.

Projects may only be submitted for adjudication in a single category. If the jury believes a project has been submitted for consideration in an inappropriate category they may move the application into a category in which it might be better considered.

Failure to meet any of the specified entry requirements could result in disqualification; if disqualified, the entry fee is non-refundable.


THE DEADLINE HAS PASSED

Fee

The professional entry fee is $150 per award entry and should be submitted as part of the entry through Submittable.com. The entrant will be notified, upon completion of the initial entry, with details for placing subsequent entries, which are $135 per award entry. The entry fee for all Emerging Classicist submissions is $25 and should be submitted as part of the entry through Submittable.com. Entries and application fees will be accepted and processed online via Submittable.com beginning in mid-October 2022.


Adjudication

The jury will represent the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and interior design. The Jury will not live or have offices in the geographic area of the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter but will be familiar with the ICAA and our mission. The submission will not be seen or handled independently of the organizers to maintain anonymity. The Jury has full authority to choose a winner or winners for each category or create additional categories if the submission(s) as appropriate. If submissions do not meet the expected level of excellence as deemed so by the Jurors, certain categories may go unrecognized.


Permissions

The individual or firm making the submission must have the approval of all parties with legal ownership of the project, the client, architect, and/or designer of record or developer. Those making the submission must have permission to use all photography and/or printed material contained within the submission. The ICAA and the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter reserves the right to use all materials contained within the submission for promotional purposes in future printed and digital media including, but not limited to, featuring winning projects on the ICAA website, classicist.org, ICAA awards book(s), and ICAA media announcements.


Notification of Winners

Winners of the John Russell Pope Awards will be notified after adjudication and recognized at an evening ceremony on April 28, 2023 at the Sulgrave Club in Washington, D.C. Winners are expected to attend or send a representative in their stead. The winning parties agree to keep the results confidential until after the ceremony. Winning entries will be displayed on the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic website and in print and digital media.
