Night Sketching: Columns & Cocktails at the Executive Office Building

October 12, 2019
6:45 PM – 9:30 PM

Eisenhower Executive Office Building
1650 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20502

October’s Columns & Coffee will take place in the evening! We’ll swap out our coffee for cocktails and our charcoals for white pencils as we sketch the light and shadow of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The building was designed in the Second Empire style by Alfred Mullet, who designed a number of federal buildings across the country in his role as Supervisory Architect within the Treasury Department. Probably best known for its exorbitant number of exterior columns (900 in total), it has also housed the offices of many American Presidents and Vice Presidents. But President Truman famously called it “the greatest monstrosity in America,” so not everyone appreciates its history and grandeur.

We will meet at the Union Trust Bar at 740 15th St NW at 6:45pm to enjoy drinks and conversation until it is dark enough for proper night sketching. The necessary supplies will be provided but are limited to about 8 people, so please RSVP no later than the close of business on 10/10.

Richmond Field Trip!

9:30 AM – 7:00 PM

1000 Bank St, Richmond, VA, 23218

This November, instead of hosting our normal Columns & Coffee, the L’Enfants are coordinating a very special field trip to Historic Richmond. Similar to our tour of Annapolis last year, we’ll be visiting numerous sites, including the state capitol, the Branch Museum of Architecture & Design, and the Jefferson Hotel. In addition, we will have the chance to view some of the monuments along the famous Monument Avenue. The fee for this event covers admission to the museums but participants should bring money for lunch and an afternoon snack. Also, be sure to bring good walking shoes and a camera and/or sketchbook.

We will gather at the Richmond Capitol Visitors’ Center at 9:30 am. Registration for this event will close on Thursday, November 14th, but guests are strongly encouraged to RSVP earlier in order to better coordinate transportation and tours.

Special thanks to the firm of Glavé & Holmes Architecture, who provided assistance in planning this event and who will be on hand to discuss their work, as well as the historic architecture of Richmond.
