Social Sketching: Columns & Coffee at The Red Cross Headquarters

Saturday, May 12th
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

The Red Cross Headquarters
17th and D Streets NW
We will meet at Starbucks at 20th and E at 10:00 am.

Columns & Coffee is a monthly social sketching excursion led by the L’Enfants, the emerging architects branch of the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter.

Anyone with an interest in sketching and/or connecting with other artists and architects is encouraged to attend.

This month, we will be sketching outside of the Red Cross Headquarters. Designed by the firm Trow-bridge & Livingston in 1915, it has served as both the Red Cross Headquarters and as a memorial to the women who served during the Civil War. The site itself is made up of three monumental buildings covering an entire block and is nestled between the equally stunning DAR Headquarters and the Corcoran.

We will be sketching for about 2.5-3 hours, but people are welcome to come and go as they please.

Participants should be prepared to bring their own materials.

Cost: Free. RSVP is required

Meridian Hill Park
16th St NW & W Street NW
Washington, DC 20009

Join the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter for a springtime tour of Meridian Hill Park.

Located on the longitude of the original district milestone marker, the park was first a site of a private mansion, then later a retirement home for John Quincy Adams. After later being converted to national parkland, George Burnap and Horace Peaslee created the garden’s Italian style and were among the first to use concrete aggregate for much of the park’s hardscape. With 13 basins, the park’s cascading water element is the largest in North America.

Exclusive Campus Tour of Christopher Newport University

Saturday, June 2nd
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Christopher Newport University
1 University Pl, Newport News, VA 23606

Join the ICAA Washington Mid Atlantic Chapter and the Center of Palladian Studies in America for a tour of this impressive new University led by Randy Holmes, and the architecture firm, Glavé & Holmes Architecture.

Christopher Newport University has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade, converting the former suburban community college-type school into a campus of classically inspired buildings and landscapes, resulting in significant positive change to student enrollment and school rankings.

The recent completion of Christopher Newport Hall was the culmination of the university’s master plan for the campus’s great lawn. Its compelling design has been recognized as both a Palladio Award winner in 2016 and a John Russell Pope Award winner in 2017. This building along with seven other projects completed as a part of the master plan will be the subjects of this presentation and tour.

This event will begin with a presentation by Glavé & Holmes Architecture on the university’s master plan and campus buildings. A box lunch will follow the presentation, proceeded by a tour of the campus buildings. The event will end with a question and answer session in the award winning Pope Chapel.

Cost: $20 L’Enfants, $20 members, $20 non members
