Join the WMA ICAA’s Central Virginia Committee for a course on designing the classical interior.  Instructor, James S. Collins, will introduce the fundamental philosophy and elements of traditional architecture and their interiors.  Participants will learn the design principles that are common to the great buildings and interiors of the past.  Handouts will include measured drawings of traditional interiors and carpenter’s guidebooks that were used for centuries as a design tool.  The discussion will include discovering the proportions common to traditional interiors and mastering simple yet time tested methods of designing and configuring chair rails, baseboards, cornices, columns, mantle pieces, and door and window casings.  Friday afternoon’s session will consist of a lecture with PowerPoint presentation. On Saturday, participants will draw an interior of their own design on 11″ x 17″ vellum sheets. Handouts will be provided for required reading. Participants will need to bring their own materials. See list of materials below.
