Gil Schafer, AIA, will speak about his journey as a Yale-trained modernist finding his way to practicing an architecture that resonated more with his own sense of place inspired by formative years spent in and around historic houses.  Mr. Schafer now practices as a classical residential architect and will show some of his firm’s work which exemplifies the same sensitivity to site, natural light, and deft use of scale, proportion, and detail that characterize historic homes, now coupled with a contemporary livability.  In addition, Mr. Schafer will discuss how the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America in New York played a critical role in his transformation from modernist to classical architect.  He will explain how that organization continues to provide a vital resource to architects like him all across the country, who have been unable to acquire any formal training in classical or traditional architecture.  The ICA & CA, in offering knowledge and training to interested architects and enthusiasts alike, ensures that the art of building remains a living tradition.

Gil Schafer is an award-winning architect whose work is found across America.  After graduating from the Yale School of Architecture in 1988, he worked for several distinguished architecture firms ranging from Bernard Tschumi Architects to Ferguson, Murray & Shamamian before founding his own New York-based firm, G. P. Schafer Architect PLLC, in 2002.  The firm’s work focuses on new traditional residential projects as well as restorations.  Mr. Schafer served as President and then Chairman of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America.  In addition to his current practice, Mr. Schafer is a member of the Yale School of Architecture’s Dean’s Council and lectures widely on the relevance of classical architecture.
